The Marion Simmons QC Memorial Essay Prize

 

First Prize - £1000 (plus £250 for books for your Faculty or College)

Second Prize - £500 (plus £150 for books for your Faculty or College)

Third Prize - £250 (plus £100 for books for your Faculty or College)

 

The Association of Regulatory and Disciplinary Lawyers invites undergraduates to submit essays with the following title:

 

"Is better regulation the way to avoid future financial crisis?"

 

This award was set up to honour the memory of the late Marion Simmons QC who sadly died on May 2nd 2008 aged 59.

 

Marion was a barrister, recorder, arbitrator and latterly, chairman of the Competition Appeal Tribunal. Her areas of practice covered a wide range of financial and commercial law including competition and regulation.

 

Marion served on the committee for the Association of Regulatory and Disciplinary Lawyers for two years and was committed in her support of young lawyers.

 

The panel of Judges will include:

  • Professor Julia Black, Law Department and Research Associate, ESRC Centre for Analysis of Risk and Regulation, LSE;
  • Professor Mary Seneviratne, Nottingham Law School, Nottingham Trent University
  • Professor Frank Stephen, Professor of Regulation, University of Manchester
  • Members of the Committee of the Association of Regulatory and Disciplinary Lawyers

Terms & Conditions:

 

Entrants must be in undergraduate study at a recognised educational establishment in the United Kingdom.

 

Entries must be no longer than 3000 words and should be type-written in the English language.

 

Essays must be submitted so as to be received by post or email by 5pm on Friday 18th December 2009 to:

Proof of eligibility may be required. A maximum of one essay may be submitted per entrant. The Judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into in relation to entries. We regret that entries cannot be returned.

 

Please provide a cover page with full name, contact address, email and daytime telephone contact number together with the name of the educational establishment at which you study. The cover page should state the number of pages included. If providing a hard copy please use A4 sized paper.

 

If submitted by email, please make sure that your copy can easily be opened as a Word document and does not have any restrictions placed on it in terms of access.
