The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) is looking for a Hearings Manager to provide operational oversight for our Professional Conduct Hearings Team, ensuring excellence in public protection and the delivery of professional standards. This is a 12 month fixed term contract to cover a period of maternity leave.

The Role
Reporting to the Registrar, the Hearings Manager will lead the Hearings Team, overseeing professional conduct cases, project delivery, and hearings implementation. You will have operational accountability for ensuring that cases are managed efficiently and to the highest quality standards, while also managing resources, budgets, and stakeholder relationships.

This role requires a confident leader with the ability to make professional judgments in complex situations, ensure compliance with key performance indicators (KPIs), and deliver robust processes that align with the Professional Standards Authority’s accreditation requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operational Oversight: Provide operational direction for the Professional Conduct Hearings Team to ensure alignment with BACP’s overarching strategy and the wider Register department’s workstreams.
  • Leadership & Collaboration: Lead and manage the Hearings Team, providing operational expertise while working with internal and external stakeholders to enhance service delivery.
  • Case Management: Oversee all cases from the initial threshold test to closure, ensuring timely and efficient progress in line with KPIs, high service standards, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Hearings Planning: Lead the planning and implementation of hearings, taking into account financial and resourcing considerations to ensure the effective delivery of Professional Conduct services.
  • Budget Accountability: Manage the Hearings Team budget, ensuring forecasts are accurate and expenditure is monitored, with proactive solutions to address any financial concerns.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong working relationships with the Professional Standards Authority, panel members, clerks, and other stakeholders to ensure the successful functioning of the Professional Conduct Department.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting: Provide performance data, risk management updates, and trend analyses to senior leadership, the Public Protection Committee, and other stakeholders.
  • Service Excellence: Investigate and resolve complaints about service delivery, ensuring thorough and timely responses in collaboration with legal advisors and other external consultants.

The Ideal Candidate
We are seeking an individual with:

  • Proven experience in leading teams and managing complex processes in a regulatory, legal, or professional standards environment.
  • Strong operational leadership skills, with the ability to make sound professional judgments in challenging situations.
  • Excellent knowledge of regulatory frameworks and public protection principles.
  • Demonstrable experience in planning, resourcing, and delivering high-quality services, including hearings or similar processes.
  • Outstanding communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Strong financial management and budgetary skills.
  • A commitment to upholding ethical standards and promoting public protection.
