The Bar Standards Board (BSB) regulates barristers, their professional practice and specialised legal services businesses in England and Wales in the public interest. We are responsible for setting education and training requirements, setting standards, authorising organisations, monitoring the service provided, and investigating allegations of misconduct, taking enforcement action where necessary. Barristers work at the heart of our justice system so the BSB’s mission is fundamentally important to the maintenance of the rule of law. It is an exciting time at the organisation, having recently modernised the way we regulate in the public interest, support those we regulate to face the future, and ensure there is a strong and sustainable regulator for the Bar.

Our people value our friendly and respectful environment, our support for flexible working, the opportunity to have a high degree of impact and our interesting, challenging and varied work.

The BSB Investigations and Enforcement team is responsible for investigating allegations against barristers and taking disciplinary or other action on behalf of the BSB.

The post holder for the Casework Officer role will hold their own caseload and will be responsible for:

  • drafting statements
  • corresponding with barristers and witnesses

The case load will include cases at the Disciplinary Tribunal stage where the post holder will be required to draft charges, decide on the content of bundles and disclosure as well as respond to issues which arise as the case progresses. They will also be required to attend hearings and support counsel at tribunals and appeals before the High Court.

Experience of legal procedures or litigation and substantial experience of casework is essential, as is the ability to work effectively as part of a team, sharing knowledge and supporting other members of staff.  Knowledge of regulatory procedures and/or experience of working for a regulator is desirable but not essential.  A legal qualification, which includes the right to hold a practising certificate, is desirable.
