Inaugural Junior ARDL Scotland – skills roundtable and networking event

Join us for a practical boost to your regulator and disciplinary law toolkit and networking as Junior ARDL Scotland hosts its first event in Scotland, an in-person skills roundtable session. The event is aimed at members of ARDL who are 0-10 years PQE and will share the knowledge from experienced practitioners to help you develop essential skills in regulatory and disciplinary law. You will rotate through various tables, each hosted by an individual with their own specialist perspective. Our specialists and their subjects are as follows:

Laura Thomson KC – Legally Qualified Chair

  • With civil and criminal advocacy experience, as a Legally Qualified Chair of the Fitness to Practise Committee of the Scottish Social Services Council and appearing at disciplinary hearings before professional regulators, including the Nursing and Midwifery Council and the Architects’ Registration Board, Laura will bring the perspective of what panels, legal assessors and LQC’s need and expect from those appearing before disciplinary committees.

Gary Burton, Partner at Anderson Strathern – Case Presenter

  • As a Solicitor Advocate, Accredited Specialist and a Case Presenter for a wide range professional regulators, including the Scottish Social Services Council and the General Teaching Council for Scotland, Gary will give an insight into what’s needed to prove a case from start to finish, including evidential issues, case preparation, managing witnesses and dealing with submissions.

Martin Walker, Partner at BTO – Defence

  • With experience in representing a range of professionals before their regulators, including the General Teaching Council for Scotland and the General Medical Council as well as those in the financial, social care and sports sectors, Martin will bring the perspective of what’s needed for a good defence and representation.

Vivien Whyte, Head of Regulatory Investigations at GTC Scotland – In House

  • With many years of regulatory and in-house experience, Vivien will discuss the in-house perspective for professional regulators, which includes the public interest, proportionality in investigation and adjudication of cases, best regulatory practice and the issues for and expectations of the public and the regulated professionals from the professional regulator.

David Blair, Advocate – Advocacy in Regulatory and Disciplinary Cases

  • With experience in advocacy before regulatory committees of all types to appearing in the sheriff court and the Outer and Inner Houses of the Court of Session, David will bring his expertise to provide an insight into what’s needed for good, persuasive advocacy, and will share his top tips for aspiring advocacy practitioners.

The round-table session will be followed by networking over drinks and canapes.
