Description: Join us for an evening of round-table discussion and networking as Junior ARDL hosts this in-person event in Manchester. The session is aimed at Junior members of the Association (0-9 years PQE) to help develop essential skills in regulatory and disciplinary law, along with career progression tools. The speakers will be speaking and hosting discussion on a wide range of practical and skills based topics, followed by food and drinks and an opportunity to network.
Fameeda Shafiq will discuss useful hints and tips from the perspective of a Junior Lawyer and how to make the most out of secondments and other outside opportunities.
Jim Percival will share his experience and tips from a legal career spanning in-house, private practice, the judiciary and academia.
Michelle Brown will speak about advocacy. This will include practical tips for working under tight time constraints and preparing for hearings.
Rachel Birks will speak about focusing on the building blocks of your career and how to forge a successful career in regulatory and professional disciplinary law.

The Chair
Clare Chapman is a non-practising solicitor and Adviser in the Practitioner Performance Advice Service (part of NHS Resolution), giving impartial advice on the fair management of performance concerns. As a practising Solicitor, Clare spent almost 22 years advising healthcare professionals in regulatory and disciplinary proceedings, first working at RacliffesLeBrasseur and then at BLM where she led the healthcare professional discipline and regulatory team until her departure in March 2022. Clare is also a member of the ARDL Committee.
The Speakers
Fameeda Shafiq is an Associate Solicitor at Ward Hadaway in their Manchester office. She specialises in professional regulation and court of protection matters. Fameeda has extensive experience in advising regulatory bodies and those who are regulated, particularly within the healthcare, social care and childcare sector. She regularly advises clients on fitness to practise concerns and on first tier tribunal appeals. Fameeda advises NHS clients in relation to court of protection cases. This includes concerns relating to the deprivation of liberty, best interests, capacity, welfare, safeguarding and residence. She has also worked on cases involving medical treatment issues regarding the consent, provision and withdrawal of life sustaining treatment.
Fameeda is a member of the Association of Regulatory and Disciplinary lawyers and is steering committee member for the Asian Business Development Group at the Greater Manchester Chambers of Commerce.
Jim Percival has been a Principal Legal Adviser at the General Medical Council since 2008 and, since 2016, has held the post of Deputy General Counsel. He also sits as a Judge (Fee-Paid), of the First Tier Tribunal (Health, Education and Social Care Chamber) and as a Chair (Senior Member) of the Valuation Tribunal for England.
Michelle Brown Michelle Brown is a member of the CBA, ARDL and HSLA. She has been a criminal and regulatory practitioner in chambers at Deans Court since her pupillage in 2005. Her practice is split between Legal aid, insurance funded and private client work. Whilst Michelle predominately acts for the defence, she occasionally undertakes work for Local Authorities, the EA, HSE and CQC. Her defence work at the MPTS extends to fitness to practice hearings, interim orders, and review hearings. Michelle completed a Masters in “Health and safety and environmental law” at Salford University in 2011 whilst in practice.
Rachel Birks is Chair of ARDL. She is a partner and the head of regulatory at Ward Hadaway’s Manchester office. Rachel is an experienced public law and regulatory lawyer specialising in the regulation of healthcare, social care, childcare and professional services. She is a Ranked Lawyer for Professional Discipline in Chambers and Partners. Rachel sits as a Legally Qualified Chair at the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service and as a Legal Adviser at Social Work England. She is also a Governor at Parrs Wood High School.
