The Team

The In-House Legal Advisory Service (ILAS) is a team of in-house lawyers, accompanied by a paralegal, compliance and protection officer and legal administrator. Our role is to provide legal advice to all GDC teams across all areas of the organisation’s work, where required. Examples of work can include:

  • Advising on the Dentists Act 1984 and other GDC legislation and its implications on cases or GDC projects
  • Drafting Rules and Regulations
  • Advising on other areas of law that might affect GDC activities including contracts, employee relations matters, equality issues and EU law
  • Providing legal support to major GDC projects, including Project Boards.

The role

We are now looking for a Senior Advisory Lawyer that is passionate about public safety and has the right transferable skills and enthusiasm for a career in healthcare regulation.

You will be joining a busy and enthusiastic legal team who are committed to development with many of our lawyers having trained with the GDC and progressed their careers here.

The main role and responsibilities will involve supporting the Principal Advisory Lawyers and Senior Counsel and Head of ILAS by providing timely, accurate and pragmatic risk-based legal advice to colleagues and the GDC’s Council on a wide range of matters including:

  • regulatory, criminal, public law, information and commercial law issues
  • relevant legal developments and
  • updates to guidance and internal processes.


We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • ·  Experience of working within a statutory, regulatory or similar framework (desirable) and who is a qualified and practising solicitor or barrister and is ILEX qualified.
  • Significant post-qualification experience advising on a range of regulatory, public, commercial law issues (essential). Experience in advising on information law and procurement issues is desirable.
  • Exceptional legal analytical skills with the ability to analyse complex legal issues and present legally sound, risk-based and proportionate advice and instruction.
  • Excellent drafting skills, including experience of translating complex legal concepts to clear, user-friendly guidance for a variety of stakeholders.
  • Prove ability to create strong working relationships at all levels of the GDC and with external stakeholders, ensuring trust and confidence in the advice provided.
