Law Society of Scotland – Regulation Solicitor

An exciting opportunity has arisen with the Regulation Directorate for a Regulation Solicitor on a six-month FTC to deliver ABS for the Scottish legal services sector, £57,000.00pa

The Team:

You would be joining the directorate that is responsible for regulation of all Scottish solicitors and working directly with the Executive Director of Regulation and other senior colleagues across the Law Society to finalise our implementation of ABS in Scotland. The Regulation Directorate is a dynamic and dedicated group of around 45 people who are passionate about proportionate, risk-based and fair regulation of Scottish solicitors.

This is an important and rewarding role. You will be busy and play a key role in creating and implementing a new regulatory regime for licensed legal service providers under the Legal Services (Scotland) Act 2010. The Society was authorised as an Approved Regulator for Licensed Providers of legal services (LPs) in December 2021. That authorisation was granted on the basis of an overarching Regulatory Scheme. The Regulatory Scheme is a high level, principles based document. Work is now required to complete the detailed policies, processes, systems and documents that sit underneath the Regulatory Scheme before we can open our doors for applications from prospective LPs. Every Directorate/Team in the Society is involved in this work. You will have the opportunity to use your skills and experience to shape the role and how our work is done.

The Role:

This role reports into the Executive Director of Regulation. You will mainly be responsible for providing legal advice and guidance to the Society in relation to the Licensed Provider Regulatory Scheme under the Legal Services (Scotland) Act 2010. You will also be the project lead for the creation of the detailed policies, processes, systems and documents that sit underneath the Regulatory Scheme and help to roll out those new processes and systems. You will have a unique opportunity to help create an entirely new regulatory and member support regime.

You will also advise our committees on the new regulatory regime, report to our Board and Council when required and liaise with key external stakeholders, including the Scottish Legal Complaints Commission.

The Candidate:

The role is open to a solicitor qualified in the UK with a proven track record of successfully delivering projects and a deep understanding of change management. As well as relevant legal experience, you will ideally have experience of working in a compliance, risk or regulatory role in a professional services organisation, other regulated entity or at a regulator. Agile Project Management qualifications would be an added bonus.

We are looking for a motivated, dynamic and high performing team player with experience of leading cross-functional project teams. Someone who can combine their excellent technical skills with an outstanding ability to deliver change and communicate to a wide variety of audiences with different interests. You will have a “can do” , positive attitude and relish the challenge of delivering solutions. Someone who is resilient and is adaptable in a fast-paced environment. The role would suit someone with experience of working in a regulatory environment.
