Newmedica – Senior Legal Counsel

Newmedica

Who are we?

Newmedica is one of the leading providers of NHS ophthalmology services in England, providing outpatients appointments, diagnostic testing and eye surgery. We interact with thousands of patients annually, from outpatient appointments to surgery to correct cataracts and helping to manage other eye conditions. We’re passionate about providing individual care for our patients and have a vision to change lives through better sight and eye health.

Our services are delivered through a variety of models including Managed Services and primarily Ophthalmology Joint Venture (OJV) Partnerships, with each eye centre focused on providing excellent care to their communities. We currently have 18 clinical sites, some of these have additional spokes meaning the supply chain spans some 30 individual locations currently. We have significant growth plans as we look to establish a national footprint and open many new sites over the next few years.

Overview of the role

Reporting into the Commercial Director, the Senior Legal Counsel is a brand-new role to Newmedica. This will be the first in-house legal role we’ve ever had in our structure, and it will play an important part in the continuing successful expansion of the business.

The role will help guide the legal strategy of the company, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and providing strategic legal counsel to senior management. The role is broad ranging, however there will be a particular focus on NHS, General Medical Council and public law regulatory and contracting matters, with a view to managing caseload in-house and supporting the business’s exciting growth plans.

Location of the role is flexible depending on the candidate – it can be based at our office location in London, or at one of our office locations in Nottingham or Southampton where the wider Group legal teams based, or alternatively can be home based with regular travel to our offices.

So what will I be doing?

In a nutshell, as Senior Legal Counsel, you play an important part in delivering legal work across the business. At every step of the way you’ll look to deliver the business’s legal requirements whilst also delivering commercial outcomes; taking a risk managed approach and identifying mitigations for those risks.

You’ll be working on a varied caseload ranging from providing legal advice on governance and regulatory matters (NHS, General Medical Council and public law) as they relate to both Private and NHS Ophthalmology services, to advice on competition law issues, ICB commissioning and market entry arising from Newmedica’s roll out of Ophthalmology services throughout the UK. And from employment law advice, to healthcare legal advice on topics such as Medicines Management Consent and Private Healthcare Information Network reporting and patient medical claims.

You’ll also take the lead on all documents relating to our Joint Venture Partnership Agreements.

It’ll be a hands-on role, so you’ll be comfortable with the negotiation, drafting and reviewing of a wide range of legal documents.

We’re looking for someone who is able to provide practical, pragmatic in-house advice, translating legalese into clear actions for lay people. We’re after clear, concise practical assistance for the Senior Management Team and managers across the business, not complicated legal terminology.

Whilst there will be wider legal support and networking from a Group perspective, we’re looking for the role holder to be a self-starter, confidently taking the initiative on relevant legal matters and owning them from end to end.

This is a rare opportunity to help create Newmedica’s dedicated in-house legal resource, you’ll truly have a clean sheet of paper and over time will help set the strategic way forward to meet the demands of the business.

What experience do I need?

You’ll be a UK qualified Solicitor or Barrister, ideally with significant knowledge and experience of advising on healthcare governance and regulatory matters (NHS, General Medical Council and public law), ideally as they relate to both Private and NHS Ophthalmology services. You’ll also ideally have significant expertise advising on ICB commissioning, competition law and market entry, as well as a good understanding of joint venture arrangements and how they work.

You’ll possess gravitas and have the confidence to hold the room with senior stakeholders and Board members, all of whom will be looking to you as a subject matter expert.

You’ll be adept at stakeholder engagement with a strong ability to build relationships across all levels and with clinical and non-clinical colleagues and external contacts alike.

You’ll be accustomed to managing external legal counsel, ideally with experience of reducing this over time as the internal processes and skillsets evolve.

It’s a fast-paced business so you too will be well versed in working at pace and you’ll have a real willingness to learn and develop new legal skills in order to service the broad remit this role has to offer.

What can we offer you?

  • Competitive salary
  • Annual car allowance of £6,600
  • Up to 20% company bonus, paid quarterly based on company performance and personal objectives
  • Profit Share Scheme
